GRAMMY HALL ADDS 25 TITLES

The Recording Academy has selected 25 new titles for the Grammy Hall Of Fame, reaching back to 1928 for singles from bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie McTell and included tracks from Nirvana, Bonnie Raitt and R.E.M. that just became eligible. The list also includes a 53-year-old song revived this past year.

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” and Raitt’s version of Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin’s "I Can’t Make You Love Me"—all from 1991—are the newest releases among recordings at least 25 years old that exhibit qualitative or historical significance.

"Memorable and inspiring, these recordings are proudly added to our growing catalog and are an integral part of our musical, social, and cultural history," Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, said while changing the needle on his Victrola to play some of the new selections.

Records by The Jackson 5, N.W.A, David Bowie, Billie Holiday, Prince, Merle Haggard and The Beach Boys are on this year’s list as is Lesley Gore’s 1963 version of John Madara and David White’s “You Don’t Own Me,” which was covered this year by Grace and featured in a Toyota ad.

The Academy's National Board of Trustees approve a committee’s recommendations for the Hall, which now in its 44th year and has honored 1,038 recordings.
