The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

Warner Bros.' Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, bowed at #1 at the domestic box office this weekend with an impressive (but not mind-blowing) $75m. That said, it was also the only debut to make the Top 5. STX's The Edge of Seventeen—the coming-of-age flick that stars Republic songstress Hailee Steinfeld—came closest, landing at #7 with $4.8m.

It's true, Fantastic Beasts' opening number is smaller than any of the proper Potter films, but it's not too far behind 2007's Order of the Phoenix ($77.1m) or 2009's Half-Blood Prince ($77.8m).

1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Warner Bros.) $75m 4,144/$18,098 avg. (debut)
2. Doctor Strange (Buena Vista) $17.6m 3,694/$4,785 avg. (week 3)
3. Trolls (Fox) $17.5m 3,945/$4,436 avg. (week 3)
4. Arrival (Paramount) $11.8m 2,335/$5,054 avg. (week 2)
5. Almost Christmas (Universal) $7.04m 2,379/$2,959 avg. (week 2)
