That tech giant rumored to have made a handshake deal to take Tidal off Jay Z’s hands is apparently not Apple. In a Buzzfeed interview, Jimmy Iovine quashed long-running speculation about such as scenario.
“We’re really running our own race,” said Iovine, who’s fond of metaphors. “We’re not looking to acquire any streaming services.”
The Apple Music maestro was responding to a question about a nearly three-month-old Wall Street Journal report in which unnamed sources said that Apple was “in talks” to acquire Tidal. Iovine’s statement was the first public comment on the situation from any Apple exec. BuzzFeed did note that Iovine didn’t deny such discussions had taken place, however.
