THIS CHART COMMITS SUICIDE

Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ much-talked-about Suicide Squad movie bowed big at the box office the weekend of 8/5, pulling in a whopping $135m, despite being torn to shreds by critics. That number means the film now holds the largest August opening weekend ever. That said, the soundtrack, which was released in tandem with its visual counterpart, has debuted on the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart at #1 with 180k. With 128k of that being pure album sales, it also debuts at #1 on that chart.

Other notable new releases include NOW/Legacy’s Now 59, which bows at #5 with 49k, and DJ Snake’s Encore (Interscope), which bows at #8 with 34k. We expect that red-hot single, “Let Me Love You”—which of course features the vocal stylings of pop heartthrob Justin Bieber—will help anchor this one on the SPS Chart for a good bit. Meanwhile, COJO’s Cody Johnson appears at #12.

YMCMB/Republic’s Drake continues to slay, earning another 73k at #2 in his 15th week out. There’s just no stopping Views. Our favorite view is still the one of our bong, but Drake’s album is definitely a close second.

Warner Bros. Nashville’s Blake Shelton sees a solid boost, flying #12-4 with 50k for If I’m Honest, which was on sale for 99 cents at Google Play. Disturbed’s Immortalized (Reprise) and DCD2’s Panic! At the Disco also enjoy Google-related sales bumps; they jump #50-14 and #43-18, respectively.

Streeting this week are albums by Valory/BMLG’s Justin Moore, Interscope’s Rae Sremmurd and OVO/Warner Bros.’ PARTYNEXTDOOR.

Early numbers suggest Moore’s country set Kinda Don’t Care could provide a challenge for Drake, who seems likely, at this point, to return to #1. Stay tuned as the race heats up.

Keeping things country, we’d also like to put Florida Georgia Line on your radar. The duo’s strongly anticipated third album, Dig Your Roots, is due 8/26, also via Scott Borchetta’s BMLG. Expect that one to be big. If you recall, predecessor Anything Goes opened with 197k in 2014. And this one is preceded by another FGL monster single, “H.O.L.Y.”

Also, where the hell is that Frank Ocean album? Boys Don’t Cry’s mercurial release date has turned out to be quite the conversation-starter. It looks like the Def Jam full-length could drop from the sky at any moment, with many believing it’ll happen as an Apple Music exclusive.

By the way, we’d like to point out that boys do cry, though, especially when they get keef on their fingers and then in their eyes.
