U.K. CHARTS: ADELE RETURNS TO #1

Adele has secured another week at #1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart as 25 (XL) rockets to the top after her show- stopping Glastonbury performance and the album’s arrival on streaming services.

The Glasto slot inspired a post-festival sales surge of 231% for 25 in Blighty this week. But it’s not the only Adele album to enjoy a rise: 21 zooms 57 places to #10 and 19 skips 163 places to land at #12.

Sunday night headliners Coldplay are up three places to #2 with A Head Full of Dreams (Parlophone), while ELO, who played Sunday night’s Legends slot, are up four places to #3 with greatest hits set All Over The World (RCA). Released in ’05, it passed the million-sales mark this week.

Rick Astley is down a place to #4 with 50 (BMG) while Beyoncé rises five places to #5 with Lemonade (RCA) as she kicks of her U.K. tour. Other bands who’ve benefitted from a post-Glasto rise include Friday headliners Muse, whose Drones (Warner) is up 163 places to #4, The 1975’s with I Like It When You Sleep… (Dirty Hit), which leaps 22 places to #23, and FoalsWhat Went Down (Warner)— up 140 places to #28.

Over on the Official Singles Chart, it’s another fairly stagnant week as Drake continues his reign with “One Dance” (Island). It’s a great track, and an admirable feat to log a 12th week at the top, but one can’t help but wonder if the Official Chart's sales and streaming formula, where 100 streams count as equivalent to one single sale, is the right way to go. The Top 5 has been made up of the same contenders, give or take a few anomalies, for weeks now. Nonetheless, “One Dance” is now the longest running #1 since 1994 —when Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around” (Mercury) spent 15 weeks at the top.

Kungs vs Cookin’ on 3 Burners are at #2 with “This Girl” (3 Beat), Drake and Rihanna’s “Too Good” (Island) improves two places to #3, Calvin Harris and Rihanna's “This Is What You Came For” (Columbia) is still at #4 and Justin Timberlake's “Can't Stop The Feeling” (RCA) is down two places to #5.
