TONYS PREVIEW: A FEW PICKS

While Hamilton is widely expected to take home the lion’s share of the trophies at Sunday night’s Tonys, the night won’t be without suspense.

FYI, it was recently announced that the event will be dedicated to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, which is being called the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and the country's worst terror attack since 9/11.

“Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando,” a statement from Tony Awards Productions reads. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected. The Tony Awards dedicate tonight’s ceremony to them.”

Shuffle Along, which itself scored multiple noms, is also expected to perform strongly (including a win for Savion Glover’s choreography). We expect The Humans, meanwhile, to take home Best Play and The Color Purple to take Best Revival of a Musical.

The evening’s sexiest matchup is undoubtedly between Best Actor Musical nominees and Hamilton co-stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr., who play the title character and Aaron Burr, respectively. Our money is on Odom, though Danny Burstein is also a strong contender for Fiddler on the Roof. Actress in a Musical should go to Cynthia Erivo for The Color Purple.

Frank Langella and Jessica Lange look assured of Best Actor and Actress in a Play wins for The Father and Long Day's Journey Into Night, respectively.

Humans star Reed Birney is the favorite to take Best Supporting Actor in a Play; his co-star Jane Houdyshell is also a favorite in the supporting spot. Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs and Renee Elise Goldsberry are both favored for the supporting categories in Musical.

Waitress, with songs by Sara Bareilles, may not be a favorite in the Musical categories, but the show is clearly scoring with audiences.

Revival of a Play includes two productions of Arthur Miller plays vying for the prize.

Tony nominees Suzi Dietz and Sheryl Kaller offered invaluable assistance with these picks.
