BROADWAY ATTENDANCE HITS RECORD HIGH

Broadway’s 2015-2016 season set another attendance record as 13.3m people saw Broadway shows, a rise of 1.6% over the previous year, according to figures from the Broadway League. Great White Way theaters grossed $1.373b—another record, though only 0.6% over last year.

The Lion King, which premiered in 1997, was the season’s top grosser at $102.7m.

The two musicals with the highest number of Tony Award nominations, Hamilton and Shuffle Along, were among the shows that have played to full houses since opening. Hamilton, which opened in July 2015 and is up for 16 Tonys, pulled in $74m, putting it in fifth place behind Wicked, Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That, which is up for 10 Tonys, has earned $7.2m since its 4/28 opening.

In other theatrical news, the saga of Bernie Sanders is now reportedly being workshopped by The Yiddish Theater, under the working title Hillary Is a Dybbuk.
