BMI has come up with a new way to get Taylor Swift to attend an awards ceremony. Create the Taylor Swift Award! And guess who will receive the first? Why none other than Ms. Swift.
The new award has been added to the litany of trophies given out 5/10 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel at the 64th annual BMI Pop Awards. The traditional lifetime achievement award, the BMI Icon Award, will go to Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, authors of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “Walking In the Rain,” “Kicks, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” and countless other classics.
The Swift Award is “in recognition of her incomparable creative and artistic talent and influence on music lovers throughout the world”; the Icon Award is for “indelible contributions to the craft of songwriting.”
It’s not the first time BMI has used an artist’s name on award. They tried it back in 1990 with the Michael Jackson Award.
The event will also recognize the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed pop songs in the United States from BMI’s repertoire. The BMI Pop Song, Songwriter, and Publisher of the Year will be named during the ceremony.
