LADY GAGA FIRST TO NAB SUPER BOWL, GRAMMY, OSCAR TRIFECTA

When Lady Gaga sings “Til It Happens to You” at the Academy Awards ceremony on 2/28, she will be the first musician to perform at the Super Bowl, the Grammys and the Oscars in the same year.

Gaga is booked to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday, do a three or four song tribute to David Bowie at the Grammys on 2/15 and will perform at the Oscars the song Diane Warren wrote with her for the documentary The Hunting Ground.

The only other acts to come close to the trifecta are U2 and Beyoncé. Back in 2002, U2’s performance at Super Bowl XXXVI, which included their recent hit, “Beautiful Day,” and a somber version of “Where the Streets Have No Name” as a tribute to the victims of 9/11, precede their show opening performance of “Walk On” at the 44th annual Grammy Awards. A year later they were on the Oscars telecast performing “The Hands That Built America.” Bey did the 2004 Grammys (a medley with Prince) and Super Bowl (National Anthem) and the 2005 Oscars ("Look to Your Path").

Last year saw the rare performance of the same song at the Grammys and Oscars: “Glory” by Common and John Legend. That powerful performance to close the Grammys in 2015 occurred when the Oscar ballots were still in voters’ hands.

Will this crush of Gaga performances—and don’t forget, she just won a Golden Globe for her acting on American Horror Story: Hotel—raise her profile sufficiently to spike Oscar chances for “Til It Happens to You”? A win could turn this trifecta into a future strategy.
