BOWIE'S PASSING SPARKS BUYING FRENZY (UPDATE)

David Bowie's death has sparked a storm of consumer activity, with his swan song, Blackstar (Columbia) hitting #1 at iTunes, the Best of Bowie comp (like other pre-Columbia catalog, available via Rhino) at #2, Ziggy Stardust at #4 and Hunky Dory at #7.

28 Bowie albums currently sit in the iTunes Top 100, with The Best of David Bowie, 1969/1974, Let's Dance, Young Americans, Aladdin Sane, The Platinum Collection and Low also in the Top 20.

On the singles side, "Space Oddity"—which figures prominently in hit film (and Golden Globe "comedy" winner) The Martian—has ascended to #5. The glam anthem "Changes" is #8 and '80s pop smash "Let's Dance" is #9 and the Queen-Bowie duet "Under Pressure" is #10; tracks from throughout the shape-shifting megastar's career dot the Top 200 songs.

As of late afternoon Monday, "Space" was selling more 71% as many tracks as Justin Bieber's #1 "Love Yourself," while "Changes and "Let's Dance" were selling roughly 50% of Bieber apiece.

Odds are this posthumous commercial renaissance will continue for some time, as new fans discover more and more of this extraordinary body of work.
