MUSIC AT THE GLOBES

Sam Smith continued his award-winning ways Sunday (1/10), taking home the Golden Globe for best song for his James Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre.

Accepting the award from Katy Perry—been awhile since we’ve seen her, eh? —he thanked the Bond movie team, Sony Pictures President of Music Lia Vollack, Capitol Records and Method Management of whom he said, “You guys changed my life.” Jimmy Napes, who co-wrote the song, accepted the award along with him.

Backstage, Smith said he will be spending the year in London writing for his next album.

It is only the second time a song from a Bond film has taken home the Globe, the first being Adele with “Skyfall” three years ago.

Ennio Morricone, who has won three previous times for his scores, won the score Golden Globe for his work on Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Director Tarantino accepted for the 87-year-old Italian composer, considered one of the most influential in history, saying, “As far I am concerned he is my favorite composer. I don’t mean movie music, the ghetto of movie music. I’m talking Mozart, I’m talking Beethoven, I’m talking Schubert.”

Morricone, who received an honorary Academy Award in 2007 but has yet to win any of his five nominations, is among the frontrunners with his Hateful Eight score for an Oscar nom.

The Globes had a musical twist with two of the acting wins: Lady Gaga picking up the actress in a TV movie or limited series trophy for her role as a hotel owner on American Horror Story: Hotel, and Taraji P. Henson winning best actress in a TV drama for her portrayal of Cookie in the hip-hop themed series Empire.

Backstage, Gaga said she plans to put out a new album in 2016, but would not give any details about the direction of the music or even her often-arresting visuals. “Will it affect my appearance? It’s difficult to say,” she told the press. “I’m still creating those things. It’s a gradual change, always with me.”
