REPUBLIC’S GRAMMY HAUL

Team Republic is feeling particularly gratified with its 42 Grammy nods, especially as 10 of these were for the two acts the House of Lipman had announced were its breakout priorities for 2015, The Weeknd and James Bay. Add Taylor Swift’s big haul and at least one pony in every major-category race, and the ethos is strong.

It’s a fine capper to a splendid year, in which Republic saw both its established and new acts dominating the marketplace and airwaves—and, until very recently, had the undisputed champ among album sellers with 1989.

In the topline categories, Taylor gets nods for Album, Record and Song (“Blank Space” for the latter two); The Weeknd is represented in Album and Record (“Can’t Feel My Face”); James Bay is in the running for Best New Artist.

In the genre categories, Taylor is in the running for Pop Vocal Album, Pop Solo Performance (“Blank Space”), Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Bad Blood”). Bay is a contender for Best Rock Album. The Weeknd is up for R&B Song and R&B Performance (the Fifty Shades smash “Earned It”) and Urban Contemporary Album.

Swift’s 1989 has sold about 5.5m. “Blank Space” is at the 4.3m mark. “Bad Blood” has moved 2.8m.

The Weeknd’s Beauty is at 747k; “Earned It” is closing on 2.4m. “Can’t Feel My Face” has sold 2.1m.

Bay’s Chaos and the Calm has moved 80k, while single “Let It Go” has tallied 266k.

Among Republic’s other noms: Drake for Rap Album, Song and Performance, Nicki Minaj for Rap Album, Performance and Collaboration; Florence + the Machine for Best Pop Duo/Group (“Ship to Wreck”), Rock Song and Rock Performance (“What Kind of Man”); and two entries for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (Fifty Shades and Pitch Perfect 2, the latter in tandem with UMe).
