 ADELE SELLS 800K IN BLIGHTY

We knew Adele’s 25 was going to be a global record breaker, and its first week in Blighty hasn’t disappointed, with over 800k copies sold of the album (out in the U.K. on Richard Russell’s XL Recordings via Martin MillsBeggars Group). In addition to smashing three records, 25 has boosted sales of the rest of the Top 40, according to the Official Charts Company. It couldn’t have been bigger.

Over 1.2% of Her Majesty’s population have bought 25, making it the U.K.’s biggest selling #1 album ever.

It has beaten the three-day first-week sales record set by Oasis in 1997 with Be Here Now at 696k, although hasn't quite achieved the band’s seven-day feat of 813k.

Shifting 800,307 in Blighty since 11/20, 25 has sold more than the Top 75 combined (86 in total), and more than the last 19 #1 albums.

Total sales figures have been certified 2x platinum by the BPI, and it’s the most downloaded #1 album ever at 252k. The previous record was held by Atlantic U.K.’s Ed Sheeran, whose x sold 96k in summer 2014. The Adele team will surely be patting themselves on the back with the decision to withhold 25 from streaming services after hearing that 68% (548k) of25’s sales were physical.

It continues. 25 also claimed the biggest first-day sales total ever, shifting more than 300k in 24 hours at the start of the week, accounting for 46% of the U.K. albums market on day one.

The sales of other non-Adele related releases have been boosted too: The rest of Top 40 is up by 21% compared to last week (674k v 558k), and up by 145% compared to average sales across previous 10 weeks.

For some context: Adele’s second album 21, released in January 2011, sold 208k copies in its first week (25 has increased that performance by 74%) and passed 500k in its fourth week. It achieved its biggest one-week tally in its 10th week on sale at 258k and has sold 4.8m in total.

Blimey, we're off to get sloshed.
