The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

After recently enduring the worst-grossing weekend of 2015 yet, it's quite uplifting to see one big debut followed closely by an even bigger one. Two weekends ago, there was Spectre, and now, the curtain has finally dropped on the Hunger Games franchise. The Jennifer Lawrence-led finale raked in just over $100m, falling about $20m short of its predecessor and becoming the fifth 2015 release to open above $100m. Worldwide, it landed at $247m (about $30m behind Part I)

1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (Lionsgate) $101m 4,175/$24,198 avg. (debut)
2. Spectre (Sony) $15m 3,659/$3,990 avg. (week 3)
3. The Peanuts Movie (Fox) $13m 3,671/$3,487 avg. (week 3)
4. The Night Before (Sony) $10m 2,960/$3,412 avg. (debut)
5. The Secret in Their Eyes (STX) $7m 2,392/$2,773 (debut)

Meanwhile, The Weinstein Co.'s Carol scored a whopping $248k across just four theaters in limited release; that's an average of about $62k per theater. The Todd Haynes film, which stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, tells the story of a young photographer in New York City who falls in love with an older married woman in the 1950s. It opened to glowing reviews, praised for its stunning visuals, and earned the third highest opening weekend average of the year.
