Heading into their new album showdown Friday (11/13), One Direction leads Justin Bieber in Shazam followers 20m vs. 17.3m. The first singles from two acts, though, have the Biebs getting a head start and leading by a significant amount: “Where are U Now,” released 2/27 and promoted at radio starting 4/21, has been Shazamed 6m times while 1D’s “Drag Me Down,” released in July, has spun the app’s blue button 1.5m times. Bieber’s second single, “Sorry,” has been Shazamed 600k times since its 10/22 release.
Intriguingly, both acts’ most Shazamed songs are not their biggest hits. 1D’s “What Makes You Beautiful” is 1D’s most-Shazamed track at 5m since its October 2013 release; Bieber’s 2012 release “Beauty and a Beat” is his hottest at 2.4m Shazams since October 2012.
