YOUTUBE RED IS A GO

Video Giant Announces Ad-Free Sub Service Will Launch on 10/28

YouTube has announced that its comprehensive subscription service, YouTube Red, will launch on 10/28.

For $9.99 per month (with a 30-day free trial), users will be able to look at all YouTube content—including music videos, movie trailers, kitties playing with the laundry and holiday clips of guys getting whomped in the nards—on mobile devices and PCs without commercials. There will also be offline viewing and background-enabled mode (the ability to use other apps while viewing vids).

There will also be separate Music, Gaming and Kids apps available, which the the media behemoth warmly describes as providing "unique experiences for each vertical."

The announcement follows the low-key year of Music Key beta-testing, which the Google-owned video giant says gave it valuable user feedback.

Will folks who've relied on YouTube as a bastion of free (and often copyright-free) content with mostly skippable ads be willing to shell out for a subscription? Ask your cat.
