TOWER RECORDS REVISITED

Those familiar golden hues have reappeared on the Sunset Strip building that used to be Tower Records. But this is Hollywood, darlings—it's always about a movie.

The new paint job is connected to the forthcoming documentary All Things Must Pass by director Colin Hanks (son of Tom), who worked for nearly seven years—even using Kickstarter—to bring this story to the screen.

It chronicles the rise and fall of the iconic Tower Records in the midst of a new digital era; a company that made $1 billion in 1999 but by 2006 had filed for bankruptcy.

The film also examines founder Russ Solomon's rebellious spirit and shows just how influential the store was not just in the music industry, but as a cultural force in other ways in the very neighborhoods where they set up shop. The Tower flagship store on East 4th Street and Broadway for instance, is widely credited with ushering in a revitalization of downtown New York City after it opened in 1983.

The film hits theatres in Los Angeles and NYC this Friday (10/16).

To celebrate the premiere, Thursday night (10/15) Eagles of Death Metal will be performing a live “Tower In-Store Performance” in the parking lot of the old Tower Records Sunset location which will be painted as Tower Records for the night, a task already in progress.
