The Top 5 Highest Grossing Films in the U.S. Over the Weekend

Fox's The Martian—directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damonwas the highest-grossing film in America this weekend. Earning north of $55m, the sci-fi thriller also scared an A CinemaScore and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It fell some $785k short of beating Gravity's record for an October opening weekend.

Lionsgate's mystery/crime flick Sicario, led by Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, leaped #10-3, up 603%, in its third week out, while Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 dropped a mere 32% in its second week.

1. The Martian (Fox) $55m 3,831/$14,357 avg. (debut)
2. Hotel Transylvania 2 (Sony) $33m 3,754/$8,791 avg. (week 2)
3. Sicario (Lionsgate) $12m 2,620/$4,609 avg. (week 3)
4. The Intern (Warner Bros.) $12m 3,320/$3,500 avg. (week 2)
5. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (Fox) $7.7m 3,319/$2,305 avg. (week 3)

Just outside the Top 10, TriStar's The Walk—a true story about French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers in 1974—bows at #11 with a strong average of $3,460 across 448 theaters.

The nail-biter, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Petit, has been receiving very positive reviews. Notably, The New York Times' A.O. Scott wrote, "I had forgotten just how long Mr. Petit stayed up there, stretching a daredevil act into an astonishing and durable work of art. In paying tribute to that accomplishment, Mr. Zemeckis has also matched it. He has used all his brazenness and skill to make something that, once it leaves the ground, defies not only gravity, but time as well."
