The numbers are in, and Straight Outta Compton is officially a smash summer film, with $56m in its opening weekend—making the much-buzzed-about N.W.A biopic the biggest opening ever for an R-rated movie in August as well as the biggest opening of all time for a rap/hip-hop film of all time. Not half bad for a movie with a $29m production budget.
This has also been a week to remember for Ice Cube and his manager of 18 years, Jeff Kwatinetz of the just revitalized The Firm.
During that period of time, Cube has become a triple threat, branching out into acting and film/TV production, with SOC his latest triumph (via production company Cube Vision), with Ride Along 2 (also Universal) set to open next January. He’s made multiple successful pitches alongside Prospect Park/The Firm, including Vacation Friends at Fox, Rocky Mountain High at Universal and an untitled Kenya Barris (Blackish)-penned film at MGM/New Line, which will be produced by Cube and Kwatinetz.

Straight Outta Compton should make it clear that Cube's importance in entertainment and culture rivals anyone's, and that he's just getting started.
