T-MOBILE DOFFS DATA CAPS FOR APPLE MUSIC STREAMING

Could T-Mobile help change the streaming game? The mobile provider has announced that Apple Music is now part of its Music Freedom initiative, which doesn’t apply monthly data caps to legal music-streaming services.

The news came alongside an iPhone 6 upgrade offer with no down payment. The fine print is here.

“As I’ve said from the start, our goal is to set ALL your music free, and we won’t stop until we do,” reads a statement from the firm’s CEO, John Legere. “As of now, the services in Music Freedom cover 95% of all music streamed on mobile in the US. I’d call that a damn good start.”

Could this newl freedom to play music without incurring additional cost drive more subscriptions and streams? And will T-Mobile’s competitors be forced to offers similar unrestricted programs?

Spotify and most of the other leading streaming services (Pandora, Rdio, Rhapsody and other services are already eligible) also benefit, of course, as the “un-carrier” makes a bigger ad/marketing push for Music Freedom and familiarizes more consumers with the value proposition of subscription streaming.

One small problem, though: T-Mobile isn’t renowned for having the best signal. Unlimited streaming with connectivity issues is a murkier proposition.
