ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER APPLE PROBE (PAGE SIX)

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is going all EU on Apple Music, so to speak, Page Six reports. According to a source, Schneiderman is specifically “asking for documents relating to potential efforts by Apple to exclude or suppress competition in the music streaming industry.”

Schneiderman, who launched his streaming-industry probe in June, is now asking other streaming services, as well as the Big Three, about their contracts to license music on the services. The sources say the probe is looking into whether Apple is trying to pressure the majors to cripple Spotify, YouTube, etc., by restricting their unlimited free, ad-supported tiers, or allegedly colluding with the labels to raise the prices of their licenses.

There’s also reportedly concern about the 30% add-on fee Apple takes on the apps of rival streaming services in its App Store.

Meanwhile, on the federal level, the FTC and DOJ have been holding talks with key music-biz execs about whether to launch an antitrust review of Apple’s business practices after the recent launch of what Page Six calls “its streaming Beats Music.” We think they mean Apple Music.
