YOUR GOOD-VIBES WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in the U.S.

Three debuts made the Top 5, led by the Melissa McCarthy-starring Spy, which overcame an early lead by Focus Features’ latest Insidious gore. The latter film wound up behind Warner Bros.' San Andreas, which held up reasonably well in its second week. The critically savaged Entourage fell flat to open in fourth place, while a third Warner film, Mad Max: Fury Road, broke $130m in its fourth weekend.

By the way, Cherrytree/Interscope's Ivy Levan sings the theme from Spy, which is distinctly shaken, not stirred, as you'll see above.

  1. Spy (Fox) $30m 3,711/$8,084 avg. (debut)
  2. San Andreas (WB) $26.4m (-52%) 3,812/$6,936 avg. (week 2)
  3. Insidious Chapter 3 (Focus) $23m 3,002/$7,662 avg. (debut)
  4. Entourage (WB) $10.4m 3,108/$3,353 avg. (debut)
  5. Mad Max: Fury Road (WB) $8m (-44%) 2,720/$2,930 avg. (week 4)

Cameron Crowe’s Aloha (Sony/Columbia) sank like an anchor following a middling debut weekend to finish at #9, grossing $3.3m on a 66% drop—and this despite a topnotch ensemble cast.

Bill Pohland’s excellent Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy (Roadshow Attractions) one of the most technically on-target rock movies in memory, opened solidly behind strong word of mouth and positive reviews from the most respected critics. The film’s $2.2m gross put it at #11, but its per-screen average of $4,600 on 483 screens put it right behind the weekend’s top three earners.
