BBC RADIO 1’S ERGATOUDIS AMONG MUSEXPO HONOREES

British artists and execs grabbed most of the gongs at the second annual Musexpo International Music Industry Awards, Music Week reports. The event took place Wednesday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt.

Winners from the U.K. included Capitol U.K. prexy Nick Raphael, BBC Radio 1, Turn First ArtistsSarah Stennett and The Agency Group founder Neil Warnock, while the Commonwealth of Canada was represented by Live Nation Commander in Chief Michael Rapino.

Shazam, Apple and EA’s Steve Schnur were also among the winners (see list below).

It was an eventful week for BBC Radio 1 Head of Music George Ergatoudis, who was honored as the International Music Person of the Year as well as receiving a proclamation from the City of L.A. During the festivities, Daniel Glass paid tribute to the BBC in general and Ergatoudis in particular as being "receptive to new artists."

But the Ergatoudis statement everyone is buzzing about was uttered a few days earlier at the Worldwide Radio Summit, which also took place in L.A. Referring to Apple, he said, "a huge disruptive monster is coming down the hill," whose "pile of cash" and "ambitious ideas" could change the music and radio industries.

"Apple has been totally revamping its iTunes store in preparation for the launch of its streaming service, and integrate it into the new iTunes eco-system," he noted, adding that the tech power is building its premium streaming service "with a huge amount of learning from traditional radio."

Interestingly, Ergatoudis made these points before MBW's Tim Ingham broke the news that Apple had poached four BBC execs following the snagging of star DJ Zane Lowe—though he may have had knowledge of the impending move at that point.

In his opening remarks, Musexpo founder Sat Bisla said the awards and the conference were "about music, which is something of the soul," praising the family spirit surrounding the event. "It's about passion, not fashion," said Bisla.
