HERZOG TO TAP NEW
MTVN CHIEF

With the recent resignation of longtime MTV Networks guru Van Toffler and the ascension of Doug Herzog into his former position atop the netco, along with his continuing oversight of other Viacom properties, wonderers have been wondering about Herzog’s strategy going forward. It has been revealed to us that Herzog (who has done nothing less than a fantastic sleight of hand with his direct report at Comedy Central) sees the digital landscape for the titular musical nets as the area of immediate concern.

Hence, look for Herzog to tap Erik Flannigan (pictured at right), who is presently EVP of Multiplatform Strategy and Development for Viacom Entertainment Group, to head up MTV, VH1 and the music properties associated with these nets. Flannigan, a Seattle native and a U-Dub grad who held programming posts at AOL, Disney and RealNetworks, joined MTVN in 2006 and has worked closely with Herzog at Comedy Central.

A strong digital play has eluded the music giant and has often been an area of criticism when looking back at the evolution of the netcos in the past decade. Flannigan will be challenged to reinvigorate or better yet to create a brand new digital future for the MTV properties. Herzog feels the well-respected Flannigan is the right man for the job and will shortly be announcing the move.

Also, look for Toffler to continue for the short term in an advisory role, which could play out through the late summer VMAs, and for the MTV and VH1 music departments to continue to consolidate under programming goddess Amy Doyle, with VH1 programming guru Sandy Alouete and MTV's Joanna Bomberg as key players on Doyle’s team.
