EXCAVATING TOWER RECORDS

Tower Records, the beloved Sacramento-based music retailer that was liquidated in 2006, will see a rebirth of sorts in Austin next month at the South by Southwest Film Festival. All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records, a documentary from actor/director Colin Hanks, was announced this week as part of the festival’s documentary program.

Directed by Hanks and produced by Sean Stuart, the film has been nearly seven years in the making, including a 2011 Kickstarter campaign, which raised $92k to help fund the project. In addition to interviews with legendary Tower founder Russ Solomon, the film will feature appearances from Dave Grohl, Elton John, Chuck D and Bruce Springsteen, industry heavyweight David Geffen and former Tower staff members. No premiere date has yet been set. The 2015 SXSW Film Festival runs March 13-21.
