IT'S ALL GREEK TO US
Clarifying the Battle for L.A.s Historic Venue

You’d be forgiven if you read recent coverage of the battle for ownership of L.A.’s historic Greek Theatre and concluded that Nederlander/AEG had won some sort of contest to retain ownership, defeating the bid to take it over by Live Nation. But that’s not what happened.

Instead, and bear with us, a City Council committee vote refused to endorse a Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners recommendation approving Live Nation’s proposal (LN earned 91% of possible points on the Board’s evaluation scale, while Nederlander/AEG scored 79%).  But in any case the issue will go before the full Council soon. A political battle for control of the venue will go on there.

In the meantime, wonderers are wondering if there will be a season at the Greek, which is in need of extensive repair and retrofitting.

“We remain confident that the full City Council will be guided by the merits of our proposal, not the political strong-arm tactics of our opponent,” reads a Live Nation statement. “Selecting Live Nation’s superior financial bid has far-reaching repercussions well beyond the Greek Theatre: much of the revenue generated by Live Nation will support critically important Recreation and Parks programs throughout the entire city.”
