The 87th Academy Award nominations, announced this morning, have a distinctly art-house feel. Leading the pack are Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman with nine nominations apiece, including Best Picture. They’re competing againstAmerican Sniper, Boyhood, Selma,The Imitation Game, Whiplash and The Theory of Everything. That’s right, folks, the Academy has settled on just eight films for the big prize this time. Best actor noms:Steve Carell in Foxcatcher, Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, Michael Keaton in Birdman and Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything. Best actress: Reese Witherspoon in Wild,Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, Julianne Moore in Still Alice, Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything and Marion Cotillard in In Two Days, One Night. Best director:Anderson, Iñárritu, Richard Linklater for Boyhood, Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher andMorten Tyldum for The Imitation Game. Best Original Song: “Everything Is Awesome” from The LEGO Movie, “Glory” from Selma, “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me and “Lost Stars” from Begin Again.
