Peter Steele RIP

PETER STEELE, singer, songwriter and bassist of Type O Negative, has passed away at the age of 48. Manager Mike Renault confirmed Steele’s death in an email, writing, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.” The Brooklyn-based goth-metal outfit scored a mainstream breakthrough in the 1990s with their third album, Bloody Kisses, becoming the first-ever platinum album for Roadrunner. The album yielded three rock radio hits in “Christian Woman,” a cover of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” and “Black No. 1.” RollingStone.com notes that the band got an endorsement from Beavis & Butthead: “These guys are like a cross between Danzig and Megadeth,” Beavis offered. The 6? 7? Steele recorded seven albums with Type O Negative, the most recent being 2007’s Dead Again. (4/16a)
