Hollywood Box Office Down

HOLLYWOOD DOLDRUMS: Sony’s remake of The Karate Kid sold a surprisingly strong $56 million worth of tickets in North America over the last three days, topping the box office tally as Fox’s retool of The A-Team finished second with a disappointing $26 million, continuing Hollywood’s less-than-sizzling summer. Total domestic box office revenue since early May has fallen about 6.4%, to $1.02 billion, from $1.09 billion in the period a year earlier. All eyes now point to this Friday’s opening of Pixar’s Toy Story 3 to boost morale, along with the latest Twilight installment June 30. Last year, eight action fantasies and animated films topped $150 million, including Up, Star Trek, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. (6/14a)
