Nokia leading in global smartphone wars

GET SMART: In closely related news worldwide smartphone shipments jumped 43% to 60 million in the second quarter from Q2 of 2009, units, according to stats from Strategy Analytics. Nokia was #1 thanks to 24 million units shipped, representing a hefty 40% of the marketshare pie. RIM was next with 11.2 million BlackBerrys shipped, followed by Apple, which shipped 8.4 million iPhones. Said Strategy AnalyticsNeil Mawston, with an apparent touch of melancholy for the plights of the tech giants: “Dozens of vendors from the telecoms, PC and consumer electronics industries are piling into the market and driving down prices. Even established brands such as Nokia, RIM and Apple are finding it increasingly hard to raise prices and profits in the face of such fierce competition." Dude, you’re breaking our hearts. (7/23a)
