Spaceland to close

SPACED OUT: The 17-year run of Silver Lake indie rock institution Spaceland will soon come to an end, Pop & Hiss reports. The club, founded by promoter Mitchell Frank, served as a launching pad for all manner of left-of-center acts, presenting some of the earliest local performances by the likes of Beck, Foo Fighters, Elliott Smith, Weezer, Airborne Toxic Event and Arcade Fire. But in March, the venue will sever ties with Frank and Jeff Ellermeyer's Spaceland Productions and be renamed Satellite, with booking handled in-house. "It just reached a point where it was time for us to move on," Frank said in a written statement, intimating that his next move could be toward a dance-oriented electronica venue. Frank will continue to oversee the Echo (which he opened in 2001) and the Echoplex (2007). Spaceland's final shows will include a monthlong Melvins residency and the L.A. debuts of U.K. bands the Vaccines and Yuck. (11/9a)
