IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD iPAD WORLD: Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker’s excellent music critic, will become the culture editor of The Daily, News Corp’s so-called iPad newspaper, the N.Y. Times reports, citing two sources involved in the project, which is in development. New Yorker Editor David Remnick said Frere-Jones will continue to write for the magazine, where he’s been working since 2004. “People who write here do all sorts of things—books, other writing—so he can do what he wants as long as the work here doesn’t suffer,” Remnick explained. The Daily, whose growing staff includes longtime Page Six Editor Richard Johnson, could launch before the end of the year. Rupert Murdoch is said to be heavily involved, in part because he believes that the publication, properly executed, will demonstrate that consumers are willing to pay for high-quality original content specifically designed for a burgeoning category of high-end digital readers.
