A WIN-WIN SITUATION: Morris leaves UMG in the extemely capable hands of another astute and experienced record man in Lucian Grainge, Doug’s hand-picked successor. When all is said and done, the two biggest music companies—comprising around 60% of the U.S. market between them—will be in the capable hands of a pair of smart guys who get it. Will they be able to work together to try and find ways to help turn around the misfortunes of an industry in a tailspin? If anyone can pull off such a feat, it’s Morris and Grainge, the latter of whom has demonstrated his rarefied expertise throughout his career, building Universal’s U.K. and international operations into dominant entities, and now getting a well deserved opportunity to put his own stamp on the world’s biggest music company.
