LUCAS’ BEEFHEART TRIBUTE: Gary Lucas, renowned guitar whiz who played in the last incarnation of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, on his final two Virgin albums, 1980’s Doc at the Radar Station and 1982’s Ice Cream for Crow, will conduct a Symposium for the late, great musician/painter Don Van Vliet this Thursday (1/13) at the Echoplex in L.A. (1154 Glendale Blvd.) starting at 8 p.m. Lucas will be joined by special guests Matt Groening, Pamela Des Barres, Victor Hayden, Stan Ridgway, Kristine McKenna, Bill Moseley, Robert Williams and Weba Garretson, with a special message from David Lynch. Lucas will show rare live footage of the band, spin unreleased tracks, project slides of Van Vliet’s amazing paintings and drawings, discuss the group’s history and players, and illustrate Beefheart's idiosyncratic guitar methodology and techniques. He’ll also bring the show on Feb. 11 to the Independent in San Francisco. Below a vintage clip from Ice Cream for Crow. (1/11a)
