MORRIS TO SONY DELAYED? The N.Y. Post reports this morning that Howard Stringer's bid to bring in Doug Morris to run Sony Music has hit a bit of a bump in the road. Sources said talks over getting Morris an early release from his Universal Music Group pact, which concludes at the end of the year, are dragging. Sony hoped Morris would replace outgoing boss Rolf Schmidt-Holtz when the latter's deal is up at the end of March. The Post claims that the move is complicated by Barry Weiss moving from Sony’s RCA/Jive to join Lucian Grainge at Universal in a so-far unspecified East Coast role when his contract expires next month. Both Morris and Weiss are expected to take some of their confederates to their new homes. “Weiss is making it his goal to kick some ass,” the Post quotes one insider. “I’m sure there’s a ton of people he might want.” (2/7a)
