Pre-Grammy recap

HEAVYWEIGHT PRELIMS: In a battle on the order of Godzilla vs. Megalon, Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" KO’d Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" in both the Rap Song and Rap/Sung Collab categories, but Em’s “Not Afraid” did score for Rap Solo Performance. Afternoon pop winners included Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Bruno Mars’ Just the Way You Are” and Train’s unavoidable “Hey Soul Sister.” R&B winners: Fantasia’s “Bittersweet,” Usher’s “There Goes My Baby” and the resurgent Sade for “Soldier of Love,” while John Legend and the Roots scored a double-double for R&B Album (Wake Up) and Traditional R&B Vocal Performance (“Hang On in There”). Cee Lo’s “Fuck You” snagged an early win for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, while Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” got Best Dance Recording.” In a completely different area code, Lady Antebellum picked up a pair—for Country Performance and Country Duo/Group Performance—for the career-making crossover smash "Need You Now." And Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah DogsGod Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise was voted Best Contemporary Folk Album. (5:00)
