GRAMMYS GO OLD-SCHOOL: Along with Dylan appearing as the ringleader of his own youth movement—going acoustic, so to speak (see below)—cool retro moments were threaded through the Grammy telecast. Bruno Mars channeled Jackie Wilson on “Grenade,” right down to the legend’s skittering dance moves; decked out in Japanese anime-inspired feathered armor, Cee Lo broke out his throwback soulfulness on the Motown homage “Fuck You,” as a suitably haughty Gwyneth Paltrow held her own against his volcanic outpourings; and we got a great view of Mick being Mick in his tribute to Solomon Burke, the Stones frontman reprising a tune the band covered nearly a half century ago. In his wrap-up, N.Y. Times critic Jon Pareles described the eternally youthful Jagger thusly: “Lean and angular in a teal brocade tuxedo, backed by a soul band in suits, Jagger sang Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” with sass and affection, rooster-strutting all over the huge stage and pushing around his guitarist [who happened to be neo-soul singer Raphael Saadiq]. No choreography—just a rock star jumping around. Some of the youngsters could take some tips. (2/14a)
