UMG'S SIDE: A Universal Music Group spokesman responded to both the Chuck D and Rick James lawsuits with the company's position. About Chuck D: "This complaint suffers from serious flaws and weaknesses, not the least of which is that the claims asserted are not appropriate for class treatment. We will vigorously defend against it.” On Rick James: “The court has simply stated that the motion, which addressed a small part of the case, is more appropriately decided at the summary judgment stage rather than at the motion to dismiss stage. We believe that once the court addresses the merits of this case, we will prevail.” Got that? Good. There will be a pop quiz tomorrow. (11/3p)
