BB adds streaming sits to singles chart

HOT 100 GETS SPICED UP: Billboard may be hemorrhaging editorial talent, and it may no longer be under the same roof as its former ace in the hole, SoundScan, but none of that has stopped the bible from giving the venerable Hot 100 a digital makeover this week. The singles chart will now include data from Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, Slacker, Muve Music and MOG to its calculations, the Wall Street Journal reports. YouTube stats will be added once a deal is worked out. The change will be most notable on EDM tracks, which don't get much radio airplay and tend to attract younger listeners who may not bother buying songs from iTunes, Ethan Smith points out. BB Editorial Director Bill Werde told the rporter that fans tend to gravitate to the same songs, whether they’re buying them, renting them or listening to the radio. "People really like hits," he said. And there are 10 songs in the Top 10. (3/14a)
