Spotify bigwigs grilled

ON THE SPOT: Many are surprised at Spotify’s lack of traction so far, as Apple continues the selling of music, TV, movies and books, while spurning the subscription model. Nine years after its launch, the iTunes brand maintains its tight grip on consumers worldwide, while the value of Apple stock just keeps growing. So wrote I.B. Bad in his latest column, posting Friday morning. And as it turns out, three Spotify bigwigs found themselves on the hot seat yesterday in two confabs half a world away from each other. Speaking at the D10 conference in N. Y., Spotify Director and former Facebook President Sean Parker said “There was some indication” that Apple felt threatened by Spotify and tried to block the service from launching in the U.S. “You hear things, people send you emails.” Sitting alongside Parker, Daniel Ek chose not to comment on why it took the service two and a half years after it launched in Europe to reach America. The interview is embedded above. Meanwhile, at Singapore’s Music Matters, Spotify U.S. chief Ken Parks reportedly failed or refused to answer numerous probing questions put to him during an interview. Asked why the service didn’t reveal to artists the amounts of their payments, Parks repeated the mantra that Spotify paid record companies and it was the labels’ responsibility to disclose the accounting to their acts. It was a tough day all around for Spotify. (5/31a)
