IB advance: Lyor and licensing

LICENSE TO ILL: Advancing a provocative topic in I.B. Bad’s latest column, one of the big debates inside WMG between Lyor Cohen and Stephen Cooper that exemplifies the struggle between the suits and the rainmakers in many companies is the licensing issue. The suits see the licensing of tracks as as a big profit center, while rainmakers see the potential TV commercial or movie trailer as a marketing tool that can drive other media, radio and record sales for new and developing artists. See Alex Clare and fun. for recent wildly successful examples of the strategy. (10/8a)
