RS Grammy nom handicapping

IN CASE YOU CAN’T GET ENOUGH GRAMMY HANDICAPPING: You’ve read what Lenny and Roy and Paul Grein had to say about likely Grammy noms; here are a few thoughts cribbed from Steve Knopper’s oddsmaking piece in Rolling Stone. Without a zeitgeist-grabbing phenom like Adele or Gaga in the mix, Knopper notes, “the 2013 Grammy nominations are likely to be a void through which just about anybody can jump.” As for Best New Artist? Knopper says the mantle “probably belongs to Frank Ocean, who may be well on his way to a huge Grammy year” (a presentiment shared by one of his sources, S-Curve ruler and close personal friend of ours Steve Greenberg). But he sees possible New Artist openings for The Lumineers (“who could easily step into the Mumford-Avett Brothers role as Credible Rock Stars of the Year”), Jepsen or One Direction. He quotes Greenberg, who asserts that Mumford & Sons are “a lock” for an Album of the Year nom; the piece also sees Bruce Springsteen, P!nk and Maroon 5 in the running. The RS crystal ball is murky as to the likelihood of Psy’s ubiquitous “Gangnam Style” getting a Record or Song of the Year nod (it would be “ballsy” of the Academy, muses Greenberg), noting Carly Rae Jepsen’s pop juggernaut “Call Me Maybe,” Gotye's chart-stomping "Somebody That I Used to Know," Maroon’s “One More Night,” Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and fun.’s “We Are Young” as contenders in these top-tier categories. Jack White, Coldplay and veterans Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Van Halen and The Beach Boys are tapped for Best Rock Album and The Boss’ Obama-boosting anthem “We Take Care of Our Own” likely to battle with Alabama Shakes and Imagine Dragons, among others, for Rock Song.
