LAST WEEKEND BOX OFFICE OF 2012: Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained earned $30.7 million (with a $10,195 average) in its first weekend, edging out Les Misérables, which did $28 million ($9981 average). But the Universal musical had already grossed nearly $40 million by the start of the weekend, earning $18.2 million on Dec. 25, which made it the second-biggest Christmas opening in history. Neither debuting film could unseat The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with a weekend take of $32.9 million ($8029 average). Another debut, Parental Guidance, starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler, grossed $14.8 million ($4396 average), while the Tom Cruise action movie Jack Reacher earned $14 million ($4180 average) in its second weekend to take fifth place. Just out of the Top 5 was Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 (Universal), with $13.2 million ($4525 average on 2914 screens) in week two. At #7 was Steven Spielberg’s latest hit Lincoln (DreamWorks/Disney), which registered another $7.5 million ($3819 on 1966 screens) in its eighth week. (12/31a)
