Alvin Lee dies

ALVIN LEE, 1944-2013: "With great sadness we have to announce Alvin unexpectedly passed away early this morning after unforeseen complications following a routine surgical procedure," reads a note from his family on the British guitar virtuoso's site. "We have lost a wonderful, much-loved father and companion. The world has lost a truly great and gifted musician." The Ten Years After leader (born Graham Alvin Barnes in Nottingham, England) reached the pinnacle of his fame performing the extended workout "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock (embedded here); the band's "I'd Love to Change the Word," meanwhile, is a staple of classic-rock radio. Lee released the album Still on the Road to Freedom last year. (3/6p)
