R.I.P. Bobbie Smith of The Spinners
BOBBIE SMITH, one of the two lead vocalists in soul group The Spinners, died of complications from pneumonia and influenza on Saturday in Orlando, according to a statement issued by the group's manager. He was 76. The Detroit-born Smith, who founded The Spinners in 1957 with fellow singer Henry Fambrough, was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Smith handled lead vocals on such Spinners hits as "That's What Girls Are Made For," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," "I'll Be Around" and "Games People Play." Just last year, the two founding singers performed live with a new lineup of the group. (3/18p)
