AOL Music Shutters

SIGNING OFF: AOL Music is shutting down, with the layoffs including Spinner editor Dan Reilly and Boombox chief Paul Cantor. Spinner.com, the rock music news site under that banner, has also been discontinued. Spinner was one of the first dedicated music sites in the digital space. It was acquired by AOL in 1999, along with Nullsoft, for $400 million, and then combined with its Netscape portal to form Netscape Radio. In 2008, Spinner was re-launched by AOL as a dedicated music site, featuring artist interviews, album streams, live performances and free daily downloads. Fans and journos alike voiced their support, with one tweeting, "They were one of the few outlets that actually paid its writers." See, it isn't only print music publications biting the dust.
