iTunes charts

APPLE RECORDS: It's not surprising to see that returning superstars Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have commandeered the top spots on the iTunes singles chart with their attention-grabbing, single-word titles. Both Perry's "Roar" (Capitol) and Gaga's "Applause" (Interscope) have generated a mountain of ink since yesterday, and both songs will be performed, with customary fanfare, at the MTV VMAs on 8/25. Also noteworthy on the singles side: two tracks from hatless country hitmaker Luke Bryan and "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Young Money/Cash Money/Republic's Drake, who's blowing up at radio. Capitol Nashville's Bryan is also #1 on the album side, thanks to pre-orders of his forthcoming monster. And speaking of monsters, Gaga's little ones have sent pre-orders on her ARTPOP to #2. The Civil Wars (sensibility/Columbia), who'll be decreed #1 on our Album Sales Chart later today, remain strong, while self-released indie rapper Hoodie Allen (kicking it with an acoustic), Panic! at the Disco (Fueled by Ramen/Decay/RRP) and Island/IDJ's Parachute, among others, make some noise.
