Americana's Honors & Awards results

THEIR ROOTS WERE SHOWING: The big news coming out of Americana's Honors & Awards, which took place last night at Nashville’s hallowed Ryman Auditorium, was that The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey,” a game-changer for the genre in terms of mainstream acceptance, was beaten out for Song of the Year. The category was won, ironically, enough, by “Birmingham” from Shovels & Rope, the Denver-based band’s Dualtone labelmates, in what has to be considered a major upset. The irrepressible boy-girl duo out of Charleston was also voted Emerging Artist of the Year. Beloved veteran artists Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell were the other winners, as their collab Old Yellow Moon got Album of the Year while the one-off partners also won for Duo/Group, the third category in which Shovels & Rope were nominated. Dwight Yoakam, another core artist, was named Artist of the Year, with The Civil Wars' Joy Williams and Langhorne Slim doing the honors. Lifetime achievement honors were handed out to Duane Eddy, Dr. John, Robert Hunter and Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz. (9/19a)
