YOUR WEEKEND PRATFALL BOX OFFICE: It took a Jackass to knock Gravity off of its stratospheric orbit after three weeks, but Warner Bros. has nothing to complain about as the acclaimed space adventure soars toward $200m domestically. The same can’t be said for Fox, which was counting on the Ridley Scott-Cormac McCarthy collab to be greeted with open arms by the No Country for Old Men crowd. Instead, it was greeted with fangs bared by critics and a shrug by moviegoers. Sony hit a double, as Captain Phillips grossed eight figures for the third straight weekend and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 drew just enough customers to pass $100m.

1. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (Paramount) – $32m, 3,336/$9,592 avg. (debut)
2. Gravity (WB) – $20.3m (-32.4%) 3,707/$5,476 avg. (week 4)
3. Captain Phillips (Sony) – $11.8m (-28.1%), 3,143/$3,754 avg. (week 3)
4. The Counselor (Fox) $8m, 3,044/$2,628 avg. (debut)
5. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (Sony) – $6.1m (-36.9%), 3,111/$1,961 avg. (week 5)

A couple of contenders emerged in the limited-release sector, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave averaged $17,480 on 123 screens and the NC-17 Palme D'Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color opened in four locations with a $25,250 per-theater average. More at Box Office Mojo. (10/28a)
