Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (UPDATE): The sci-fi adventure Ender's Game led a less than robust cinematic field this weekend, winning $28m, which is on the low end for a genre blockbuster. The $110m Harrison Ford space tale somewhat overcame the negative press generated by the source book's author, Orson Scott Card, whose homophobic comments had prompted some calls for a boycott. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa fell but was able to get up in its second frame; it's now made more than $62m, quadruple what it cost to make. The Top 5's other film debuts, oldster comedy Last Vegas and animated entry Free Birds, were off to weak starts. Gravity, meanwhile, continues to be buoyed by great word of mouth and awards buzz; the Bullock-Clooney astro-saga has racked up $219m in five weeks. And though they're still in limited release, Oscar contenders 12 Years a Slave (+115% in week three) and debuting Dallas Buyers Club are both powerful performers, earning per-screen averages of $11.2k and a whopping $29.3k, respectively.

1. Ender's Game Lionsgate $28m; 3,407/$8,218 avg. Debut
2. Bad Grandpa Paramount $20.5m (-36%); 3,345/$6,129 avg. Week 2
3. Last Vegas CBS $16.5m ; 3,065/$5,390 avg. Debut
4. Free Birds Relativity $16.2m; 3,736/$4,336 avg. Debut
5. Gravity Warner Bros. $13.1m (-34.8%); 3,024/$4,342 avg. Week 5

In other intergalactic news, the UMPG security department has an idea for a really cool movie about a dude who's, like, taking care of humanity's last remaining pot plants in outer space. It's called Silent Rolling. (11/4a)
